when designing to trigger the collective memory, it is important to not try to pick up on things that happened too long ago, or involved too small of a group. in boston, many people have memories of going to church. from the ritual of congregating every sunday morning, to the sporadic, isolated events of attending christmas mass with familty, the church is a place and a space that is very deeply embedded in boston’s collective memory.

the church speaks of an era focused on parishes and neighborhoods, before cars, bussing, and the widespread media of our current global world. i want to design something that is secular in function, but can still communicate spirituality, with a focus on the neighborhood.
